Light my fire
JEFFREY PHILIP BOATENG BFAA28003
Light my fire was a short film that left me confused and curious. I got engaged into the film when a man came out from his house ,
Yelling as if ready to fight someone and drove off.
An angry father named Miles storms out of the house to warn his daughter’s boyfriend, Clark. The warning lead to a violent fight fuelled by rage. He Returns home only to find his daughter Lucy silent and distant, her action highlighted the emotional gap his anger couldn’t fix. I Believed the central message of the film was Discipline, because when Miles went to avenge for his daughter Lucy, he realized that Clark’s father Roy, had a bigger ego than His. The film gave me a surprise when Roy felt angry after realizing what Clark did again and takes action against him to pacify Miles which is not common among white fathers. The characters were well-developed and believable because their actions were realistic and their objectives were clear.
Emotional and withdrawn action made the film more engaging. Roy (Clark’s father) stood out positively, to me because his attitude contrasts Miles (Lucy father) attitude. The relationship between Miles and his daughter Lucy was what derived him to fight for her, avenge for her and protect her, this showed the compelling relationships between the characters. The cinematography was simple and engaging. The final shot of the film is a close up of the fathers face as he watches television, dejected and dissatisfied, I found this shot striking . The use of blue, white and red, is very effective communicating the American Identity and the holiday (Independence Day in United States) it was. The film makes use of Natural lighting creating a mood of a sunny holiday. The framing brings the audience attention to the characters.
The soundtrack greatly helped the story telling. The driving scene is accompanied by some fast paced music while the final scenes are accompanied by morose to enhance the mood. The dialogue was audible and clear. The sound effect added to the mood of the scenes, the sound of
The dog barking is used to heighten the tension of the audience. The film was very intentional.
There are many moments of silence that increase the tension in the scenes.
The film exceeded our expectations. One of the strength of the film is the multilayered themes it
Carries. It creates a great amount of depth making it very powerful despite its length. The limited
Perspective on the part of the character Lucy, focus on the father’s journey become a fault as the
Daughter has very little dialogue, this becomes the weakness of the film. We felt pity for the
Father because, after all he did he could not pacify his depressed daughter. We would recommend
The film to others because of Roy’s behavior. Fathers should not cover up their son’s crime like
What Roy did. With Miles going to Clarks house to seek revenge did not make his daughter feel
Better and Roy punishing his son like that does not guarantee he did change, so we believe the
Lasting impression of the film is two wrongs don’t make a right.
